Self-Efficacy is the goal...

Self-efficacy is your belief in your own ability to succeed in specific situations, manage challenges, and accomplish your goals.

What is Self-Efficacy?

It's your belief in your ability to do the thing — not just want it, but actually do it.

Psychologist Albert Bandura coined the term, and the distinction matters: this isn't about self-esteem. It's about whether you believe you can handle a specific challenge, learn a specific skill, or push through when something gets hard.

It's the difference between "This will be difficult" and "I can figure this out."

Why It Matters

Self-efficacy shapes how you approach almost everything. People with stronger self-efficacy set more ambitious goals, stay with hard problems longer, and recover faster from setbacks. Not because they're more talented — because they believe their effort is worth something.

When it's low, the math flips. Why try if you'll probably fail? That's not laziness. It's a protection strategy. And it's costly over time.

Four Ways to Build It

Mastery Experiences — Small, real wins stack. Completing something hard updates your brain's estimate of what you're capable of.

Vicarious Experience — Watching someone like you succeed. Not a highlight reel — someone who struggled with something similar and got through it.

Social Persuasion — Honest encouragement from someone who sees your capability clearly, sometimes more clearly than you do.

Physiological States — Nervousness and excitement feel nearly identical. Learning to read that activation as readiness rather than warning changes everything.

How to use this

Go through each skill area at your own pace. For every item, mark whichever column feels most true right now. There are no right answers — this is about getting an honest picture, not grading yourself. Some areas may surprise you. That's useful information.

You can do this in one sitting or over a few days. Bring it back to session when you're ready to talk through what came up.
